All attorneys have a tough job. Attorney is the name given to all lawyers. Aspiring attorneys face a long and hard process. Becoming an attorney is extremely tough and takes years. Even right after one becomes an attorney, it will most likely be years until they gain the credit and respect in the position they were seeking from the beginning. Good attorneys become good attorneys only through experience. Even with college and law school under their belt, attorneys require years of experience before they can obtain a position at a respectful law firm. Attorneys have a job description that might seem simple in theory. However, every attorney faces pressures that can force one to question their morality as well as their original goal. Attorneys have one of the most difficult jobs possible, but their are many benefits to being an attorney. An attorney has always been a profession that comes with honor and prestige.
In order to become an attorney, one must get good grades in college and graduate and then receive a law degree from a law school. The better the law school that the aspiring attorney attends, the better their chances of receiving a good position when the attorney graduates. In order to get into law school, an aspiring attorney has to take the LSATs, which stands for Law School Application Test. Law schools accept aspiring attorneys by combining their grade point average from college with their LSAT score. In addition to college, law school can be very expensive. It can be years or even decades before student loans are paid off. Many people who have gone to law school regret their decision once they have spent as little as less than a year at the school. Law school is extremely time consuming and has often made individuals question themselves as whether or not they really want to be an attorney.
Once they graduate from law school, many attorneys live very stressful lives. Attorneys represent clients in court in specific areas of law. It is not uncommon for attorneys to represent people they do not believe or agree with. However, it is still in their best interest to win every case because winning means more money and a better reputation. An attorney’s career is based on their reputation and their record. It is this aspect of the job that often has attorneys questioning their morality. If an attorney believes someone is guilty of a crime, it might be morally wrong to defend that person but by losing that case, it would negatively affect the attorney’s career. Many attorneys have to go on several business trips over the coarse of a year. While traveling can be fun and have its advantages, business trips for attorneys do not include any extra time for pleasure. A business trip for a lawyer would typically include meetings with either clients or attorneys from the same firm, if the firm is nation wide or possibly another firm. A terrible aspect to being an attorney is the lack of time one gets to spend with his or her family. Most attorneys work long hours, many of which are spent at the office instead of at home. This can really negatively impact a marriage or relationship as well as those attorneys who are trying to raise a family. Not being able to spend time with one’s kids can be devastating. This is another factor that has many attorneys questioning themselves if this is what they really want to do for a living.
In addition to the several negative aspects that attorneys deal with on a daily basis, attorneys receive many perks and benefits. Attorneys generally receive a good salary. In 2008 studies were done that suggested the average lawyers makes more than $110,000. However, attorneys that have obtained years of experience can make much more than that. Another positive plus to being an attorney is the chance to get to work with very intelligent people. The people an attorney works with went through the same or similar schooling, so it common that attorneys are constantly surrounded by smart people. Attorneys also enjoy lots of respect from the general public, simply because attorneys have always been a well respected profession. One of the best aspects of being an attorney according to the attorneys themselves would most likely be the ability to bring criminals to justice. This is what inspires people to become an attorney as a kid and part of why that dream is made into a reality through adulthood. Although our judicial system does not always work the way it was designed to, attorneys get be super heros in many ways. When children become obsessed with super heros, a lot of it is based on the theatrics that attribute them. However, at the core of that obsession is the desire to defeat the good guys. Attorneys get to make sure the “bad guys” face the punishments they deserve.
Practicing law is not easy and that is made clear from the outset. However, it is difficult for a reason. Those who practice and uphold the law must be fit to do so. This is why extra schooling and vigorous testing is required. Even after school, bring a new attorney is possibly one of the hardest jobs. They had just finally completed law school, yet they have still not achieved the position that they desired and worked so hard for. Since it is very difficult to get a position at a good law firm right out of law school, many recent law school graduates will start their own law firms. This can result in lawyers practicing law without being told whether what they are doing is right or wrong, good or bad. However, there are not many options. A law school grad can either work there way up to a good law firm which can take a very long time or start their own law firm. When in that position, the latter seems like the better choice. It can be many years before an attorney is satisfied with their position. When an attorney first starts working at a law firm, they are usually left with the most tedious and least rewarding responsibility. The hard work it takes to become an attorney needs to be made more clear before the process starts. Practicing law is not as glorious as it looks in television shows like Law and Order or Crime Scene Investigation. Instead, it is full of undesirable work and hours that can cause major sleep deprivation. While many attorneys do love their job, people aspiring to be one should be made aware of the long tough road ahead. It is not uncommon for law students to drop out within their first couple of years, because it was not what they thought it was going to be. This potentially wastes thousands of dollars.
Attorneys have a one of a kind job. They make a lot of money, they are well respected and they get to bring criminals to justice. However, they must go through years of expensive extra schooling, work long hours for their entire career and deal with morality issues in order to maintain a successful record and reputation. Many attorneys love their job and feel honored to be practicing law in The United States, a country which prides itself greatly on the laws that govern it. However, there are those who practice law who let the negative aspects of their job take over their thought process and it clouds their judgment. This is why so many attorneys question the goals and their motives. Every attorney is different and being an attorney is definitely a specific mold. That is why all lawyers are great. They have all worked extremely hard to get where they are today and sacrificed a lot of time with family and friends, an average social life as well as free time. Honor and respect are two words attributed to being an attorney because of what they put themselves through for the good of the country. All attorneys believe in a greater good for our country and are willing to work so hard in order to achieve that. Attorneys deserve all the credit they receive. While there have been advancements in interpretation of law the basic principles of law have not changed much at all. Meaning that attorneys of today hold the same responsibilities as the attorneys that practiced law during the birth of our country. That is surely something to pride yourself on.
